Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is a Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)?A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice nurse with a Master’s or Doctoral degree and board certification, specializing in mental health care. They are trained to assess, diagnose, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, provide therapy, and develop treatment plans for various mental health conditions. PMHNPs take a holistic approach, combining nursing expertise with psychological and pharmacological knowledge. Whether you need therapy, medication, or both, a PMHNP provides compassionate, evidence-based care to support your mental health.
-
What is the difference between a Psychiatrist and a Nurse Practitioner? The main difference between a psychiatrist and a psychiatric nurse practitioner lies in their educational background and scope of practice. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health, trained to diagnose and treat mental illnesses through medication, therapy, and other medical interventions. They complete medical school and residency to gain their expertise. In contrast, a psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse with specialized training in psychiatric and mental health care. PMHNPs assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders, provide therapy and counseling, and prescribe medications within their scope of practice. While both professionals work in mental health, psychiatrists have a broader medical background, whereas psychiatric nurse practitioners bring nursing expertise and often focus on a holistic, patient-centered approach.
